Last year I launched a membership site that teaches social media and digital marketing to freelancers and consultants.
It makes between $5,000 - $6,000 per month.
It’s recurring revenue for my business that gives me more time freedom and the ability to be more selective with clients that I work with.
If you are a freelancer or a consultant, you might want to add this to your income stream.
Why Start a Membership site?
The reason why I decided to starting offering digital products in my business is because I wanted to diversify my revenue streams.
I also do social media and content marketing for small businesses.
The income I make from selling digital products, really helps me with being more flexible and being able to say NO to clients I really don’t want to work with.
The problem that a lot of freelancers and agency owners face is that they rely on clients to pay them each month.
And sometimes they can become desperate to work with any client just to keep making money.
Clients will come and go. That’s the nature of have a service based business.
But when you have other streams of income, even if you lose a client or two, you still have money coming in from other sources.
The money I make from my membership site allows me to generate income on auto-pilot each month and I can be pickier with the type of clients I want to work with.
Benefits of Starting a Membership Site
You can work from anywhere. Having a monthly recurring revenue business allows you to work from anywhere in the world.
You can take time off when needed and still continue earning money on auto-pilot.
You can upsell to more higher priced products or services. If you are a freelancer or consultant, your membership site can be the first stepping stone to doing more advanced work with you personally.
And you can charge more money for this by upselling to your more expensive services or programs.
A membership site can provide consistent monthly income that is predictable.
When you track the metrics behind running your site, you can make some forecasts about how much money you will make in the next couple of months.
What I love about running my membership site is that I can help more than just one client at a time.
It’s the one to many approach that allows me to help over 200 women who are members of my program.
I provide both online training and group coaching each month to members.
And its really rewarding to hear when a member has a success and shares it with the community.
In fact many people join membership sites for the content but stay for the community.
The community is what my members really get the most benefits from because its like a support group for women who are freelancers and consultants.
If you are interested in starting your own recurring revenue program like a membership site, here are a few things you need to be ready to do.
Choose a Niche
You really need to focus on a niche that you can serve month after month. An example of a niche could be helping Real Estate agents with their marketing or helping speakers get self published. Here are other examples of niche membership sites:
- Lesson plans for teachers
- Marketing for artists and painters
- Video creation and editing
The more niche your membership site is, the more easier it will be to attract members.
Invest In Your Business
You need to be ready to invest some money into your business. It does’t have to be a lot of money, but you may have to invest for tools to run your membership site.
Also, Facebook Ads have really helped me build my email list. You can run some low cost Facebook ads but you need to split test them and find out what works for your specific audience. You can spend at little as $5 - $10 per day on ads.
The other thing I invested in was online courses and joining other membership sites. I learned a lot by investing some money in the right programs.
You Need an Email List
In order to start a profitable membership site or even to sell online courses, you need to build your email list.
The way you do that is to create a “Lead Magnet” which can be a free ebook download or a video training.
I cannot emphasize how important this is. I have seen people who spend a lot of time creating their membership site and courses only to launch it to crickets because they have no email list.
Create an Online Audience
You need to create an audience of potential buyers before you launch your membership site. This will help you get feedback on what is it they want and will be willing to pay for.
You can create an audience by growing your social media followers and building up your email list.
A free Facebook group is a great way to grow an audience of potential buyers for your products and services.
But not only that, you can get feedback from them. This really helped me create my programs based on what members of my Facebook group reacted to and expressed interest in.
What Tools Should You Use?
There are a lot of options for building the platform to host the content for your membership site. There are built in platforms like Teachable and then there are Wordpress plugins that let you customize and create your own site.
